Shakespeare in Schools Programme
At Vicarage, we believe in the immense potential of all our pupils. Our Shakespeare programme, in collaboration with the Shakespeare Schools Foundation (SFF), focuses on developing pupils’ literacy, oracy, emotional, and drama skills through the study of Shakespearean works like Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet
Here’s what’s involved:
Lessons – Around 20 pupils from Year 5 are selected to participate each year. Children then attend weekly lessons in which they delve very deeply into the language and meaning of a William Shakespeare play.
They develop a mature understanding of the rich text, as well as staging a 30-minute version of the show in the Bard’s original language. Children also have access at different points in the year to professional actors and directors through the SFF to develop their skills even further.
Performance – Pupils work towards a final performance in a theatre as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival.
Why do we do it?
The programme helps pupils develop essential life skills like teamwork, self-expression, and problem-solving. It also boosts academic achievement, enhancing comprehension skills, verbal and written communication, memory, and focus. Additionally, it provides access to the arts, broadening pupils’ cultural capital and boosting their confidence and enjoyment.
